Hurworth House, Newmarket, September. Design and Build: J Winter Landscapes Ltd

After winning the tender for this project we started work in November 2014, with completion 2 months later in January 2015.  Work ran concurrently with the renovation of the property.

The garden was relatively small yet had a beautiful outlook on neighbouring paddocks. Cambridge-based designer Spike Jackson was responsible for designing the project and his careful attention to all of the detailing within the garden helped hugely when coming to implementing the design.

The main difficulties encountered during the build, were poor access along a narrow pathway that made importing materials very time-consuming. This coupled with the extremely low temperatures during winter, particularly when cladding the walls with slate, made for a challenging but rewarding project.

The materials used within this scheme were flame-textured lime stone paving, slate cladding and powder-coated steel for the water feature and wall ends. The south facing garden was a complete sun-trap which meant the designer used a high percentage of drought tolerant plants throughout the scheme.

Despite its landscaping challenges, the design, build and level of finish resulted in exactly what the client wanted.
